Study at the University of Twente – What you need to know

UT’s academic culture is based on project-based education . In addition to this, students are continually challenged to share their opinion and generate discussion about their reading. However, interaction with teachers is almost nil.

Only when you are doing something wrong will the teacher address you, but if this does not happen, it is an indicator that you are on the right track. Therefore, it is an educational system that promotes student independence above all else. This also means that your best teacher is your own classmates.

This does not mean that teachers do not continually ask questions, and when this happens, what is expected is that you give a reasonable solution, but not a perfect one, since the idea is that you develop a good solution with the new information and your creativity.

The most valued by Dutch academics is discussion , which is executed with great passion. Everything that is presented must receive criticism, and this is not taken personally, but rather as a contribution to improve what is given.

Can you work while studying?

If you are part of the European Union you can work in the Netherlands without any kind of restrictions and without the need for a permit. However, if you come from a non-European country you will have to get a work permit issued by your employer.

This is an essential requirement, but it only enables you to work 16 hours a week for a year, or full time in the months of June, July and August. If you are going to do internships within the university you do not need any permit.

The same happens if you are going to work independently, a situation in which you do not have a limit on hours either.
